Drogba's backing Lukaku to lead Belgium to World Cup glory

Former Chelsea hero Didier Drogba has revealed just why he’s backing Romelu Lukaku to lead Belgium to World Cup glory as he challenges the Manchester United star to win the Golden Boot award too.

The international Red Devils just overcame Japan 3-2 in the Round of 16 stage of the competition having been trailing 2-0 at one point after the half time break.

Lukaku couldn’t manage to get himself on the scoresheet but showed real intelligence in helping his nation grab the winner at the death by dummying an effort for Nacer Chadli to score.

Perhaps even greater than the dummy was the run that the striker made to create space for his teammates prior to the goal and Drogba recognises his quality.

Romelu and Belgium have some way to go still to win the World Cup however and will have to face off against a solid Brazil side in the quarter finals.

According to the Daily Mail, Didier said to BBC Sport: “I am still challenging him, for example, to get more goals for United next season than the 27 he got last season, and to get the Golden Boot at this World Cup, too.

“We do not always talk about work, though. I have been to see him at Belgium’s training camp in Moscow and we did not speak seriously then.

“I know his team-mates Eden Hazard, Marouane Fellaini and their assistant coach Thierry Henry as well, and it was nice to speak to them all about everything and nothing.

“It was just normal chat between friends, making jokes about players and watching Croatia’s win over Argentina at the same time.

“We were just having fun and it was clear that Romelu and the Belgium squad are in a good place, not just playing well and winning games.

“That is one of the reasons I am backing them to do so well at this tournament, and with Romelu in this sort of form, they definitely have a chance.”

Lukaku managed to score four goals in two group stage games before suffering an injury that kept him out of the final match which was against England.

Belgium managed to win nonetheless and he was passed fit to face Japan whom he terrorised but couldn’t get on the scoresheet against.
