Manchester United star Jesse Lingard has dismissed claims that England were happy to avoid the more difficult side of the World Cup and backed his country to go far in the competition.
The Three Lions went head to head with Belgium in the group stages with the winner of the clash topping the group and therefore facing the more difficult opponents in the latter rounds.
England were draw with Colombia while the international Red Devils drew Japan and after defeating them have now drawn with tournament favourites Brazil.
Some people claimed that Gareth Southgate’s side weren’t concerned with winning but Lingard believes no one was fussed whether they would get a more difficult draw or not.
Nonetheless, it would all be for nothing if England end up losing against Colombia in the Round of 16 stage of the World Cup despite no real expectations on them.
According to Calcio Mercato, Jesse said: “Obviously we’re going to have to play the big teams sooner or later. If you want to be the best team in the world you’ve got to beat the best teams.
“We’re not really fussed what side we got chosen on. Everyone’s excited more than anything. It’s a great chance for us to really go far in the competition. We believe we can do that.”
The jokes on social media about England returning to the country with the World Cup trophy have slowly started to become a reality for some as tournament favourites continue to get knocked out.
Portugal, Argentina, Germany and Spain have all gone home while Belgium almost lost to Japan having trailed 2-0 at one in point in the second half.
