Leicester City defender Harry Maguire is reportedly not Jose Mourinho’s primary central-defensive target this summer, contrary to popular belief amongst Manchester United supporters.
Reports linking the 25-year-old with a move to Man United have gained pace over the past week, with the club being said to value him at £60m.
At that price, you would have thought Maguire was Mourinho’s first-choice man to bolster his defensive options but that doesn’t quite seem to be the case.
According to Duncan Castles, Maguire has just been one of a number of names on the defensive shortlist this summer and links were intensified simply due to his impressive showings at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
He chipped in with goals and solid performances from the back as he helped England reach their first semi-final since lifting the trophy in 1966.
An obvious name that comes to mind if Maguire isn’t first-choice is Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Toby Alderweireld, who has also been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
The 29-year-old was frozen out at Spurs by Mauricio Pochettino in the latter stages of last season and has looked odds-on to depart North London in the near future.
Interested parties would only have to pay £25m to secure the Belgian’s services next summer due to a clause in his contract, so it seems like he could be the most likely defender to arrive in the next two weeks.
