Manchester United are reportedly willing to break the world-record fee for a defender in their pursuit of Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire this summer.
Jose Mourinho has made strengthening the position a priority in an attempt to bolster his squad ahead of the 2018-19 season, with Marcos Rojo likely to be forced out of the club as a result of a new arrival.
Maguire had a solid debut campaign at Leicester, which was followed by his role as England’s highest performing centre-half throughout their awe-inspiring 2018 World Cup run in Russia, reaching the semi-final stage for the first time since the nation’s only success in 1966.
The Telegraph report that Man United are so eager to bring Maguire to the club, they will not hesitate in smashing the world-record transfer fee for a defender to lure him to Old Trafford.
United are said to value the 25-year-old at £60m, but it could take an offer in excess of £70m to even tempt Leicester into selling another one of their star men after just one season.
The newspaper also state that Claude Puel is prepared to make Maguire the second highest paid player at the King Power Stadium behind United and wants to build the side around the Sheffield-born defender.
Maguire still has four years left on his Leicester contract, but the club are already looking to tie him down to a new contract worth up to £100,000-a-week in order to persuade the star to stay.
