Manchester United youngster James Garner has received a surprise call-up to the first team’s pre-season tour of the United States this month.
The 17-year-old, despite only making his debut for the Under 18s last year, has captained the Reserves under Kieran McKenna, who will join Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff for next season.
McKenna nominated him for the ‘Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year’ award back in May and he will, in the absence of Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Fred during the early stages of pre-season, have a chance to show what he can do in central midfield.
His father, Dave, confirmed on Twitter that his son had received a call-up to the tour squad by Mourinho.
“Now it’s been announced to his teammates. I can reveal that James.. Jimmy Garner… A Manchester United U18 player has been selected to tour with the 1st team on their pre-season tour in the USA,” he said. “Well done son.. Enjoy”
You cannot help but feel as if McKenna, who knows Garner extremely well and obviously likes him, had a big say in this development. Pre-season is still ten days as away but the former Under 18s coach is already making an impact on the shape and feel of the first team.
And he is unlikely to be done there. Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes are also in line for their first tour, while Axel Tuanzebe, Timothy Fosu-Mensah will hope to use the sparse options available to Mourinho to their advantage.
Players like Matty Willock, Tyrell Warren and Callum Gribbin could receive a surprise call-up as well.
