Roy Keane has hailed Paul Pogba as an outstanding footballer and emphasised that he needed better support around him at Manchester United next season.
The Frenchman produced an emphatic midfield first half performance against Peru on Thursday, setting up Olivier Giroud, whose shot was turned home by Kylian Mbappe, with a perfect through ball.
He has nonetheless continued to draw criticism from former players and those watching around the world following a season which saw him drift in and out of form under Jose Mourinho.
But Keane, normally critical of the 25-year-old, has noted how he would benefit from more help in the middle next season.
Keane: “I know we’re all pretty critical, but I really like Pogba, I think he’s a top player. I think he needs a couple of men next to him to help him along. We all need a helping hand and I don’t think he’s had it in the last year or two.”

It is absolutely worth taking note of how Keane, a former Man United midfielder and captain, insists that Pogba – or any top midfielder – does need help from his teammates to truly perform. And I, personally, would be more inclined to believe that over anonymous faces on social media claiming: well, if he was that good, he wouldn’t need anyone else!
Midfield is like a see-saw of sorts. It requires a reciprocal and symbiotic relationship between players. And too often it has looked like Pogba has played on his own in the middle.
The injection of Fred, who was announced officially on Thursday, will hopefully add an extra veneer of control and efficiency to the middle alongside the Frenchman next season.
