Manchester United have already had quite a remarkable transfer season. The Red Devils already confirmed two new additions to the first team and are pursuing a number of other potential transfers.
Current signings
The first of these new arrivals is Brazilian Midfielder, Fred. United acquired him from Shakhtar Donetsk in a £47 million deal. While Fred picked up an ankle injury playing in Brazil, United will be hoping that the 25-year-old will be able to shine at the world cup in preparation for his Old Trafford debut.x
The second new arrival to Old Trafford is Diogo Dalot, a player who Mourinho has touted as being the best full-back in Europe. Mourinho signed the defender from Portuguese side Porto for £19 million, perhaps in the hopes of providing some serious competition for Antonio Valencia over the next season.
With two strong signings already in the bag, United are already eyeing a number of other potentially game-changing signings from around the globe.
Toby Alderweireld – Tottenham
It’s no secret that Mourinho is eager to sign a strong centre-back, and it’s also no secret that his preferred choice for this role is Belgian national squad player Toby Alderweireld, currently signed to Tottenham Hotspur.
So far, Alderweireld has held off signing a renewal of his contract with Tottenham. As a result, his contract’s release clause will be at £25M in a year’s time, at which point interest in the player will no doubt peak. If Mourinho wants to snap up the player before anyone else, he might be willing to meet the player’s reported £150,000 a week salary demand. Should that money shore up United’s defensive line, however, it will be money well spent.
Daniel Levy, chairman of Tottenham, has gained a reputation for being a tough negotiator. Coupled with optimistic projections for Belgium’s performance in the World Cup, as reflected in the odds they are being given many bookies – for example Betsson VM odds – it is possible that the player will be returning from Russia more valuable than when he arrived.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic – Lazio
There have been murmurs connecting Manchester United to the Lazio midfielder for much of this summer. According to these reports, both sides are eager to move forward in principle, but the alleged £90 million asking price remains a stumbling block to progress.
Were the signing to go through, there is little doubt in anyone’s mind that the 23-year-old would make a fine addition to the United squad. However, with his potential signing coming hot on the heels of Fred, the arrival of Milinkovic-Savic would cast doubt over the long-term future of Paul Pogba.
By the time the winning nation lifts the World Cup trophy on July 15th, there will undoubtedly be a host of other players attracting attention from top-flight football clubs in England and beyond. Other high-profile names that have been tied to United include Gareth Bale, currently at Real Madrid, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is also at the same club.
Manchester United have worked hard to turn their fortunes around since the departure of Alex Ferguson, in fact they have recently returned to excellent form, but these new signings could take them even further.
