Manchester United star Paul Pogba has called on the French fans present at the World Cup to be more than just spectators following boos that were heard in their last group stage game.
The midfielder’s nation couldn’t do more than get a goalless draw against Denmark and supporters were clearly not happy with the dire display.
Despite what happened France topped the group leaving Pogba bemused with the way fans reacted to the result as well as the match itself of course.
The United man will come up against Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the round of 16, giving him the perfect opportunity to prove his worth on the biggest stage in international football.
The former Juventus star is central to his country’s plans in the World Cup just as he is a core part of the set up under Jose Mourinho’s team.
According to Goal, Paul said: “I don’t know what people expect, that we win 10-0 or 5-0? The most important was the qualification, and we did it.
“We need everyone with us. Our fans are the 12th man. We need fans, not spectators. I don’t know if the boos only came from the French fans, people wanted more spectacle.
“Our objective was to finish top of the group. It should be the objective of everyone.”
There’s truth to Pogba’s words but players must understand the fans’ perspective as well when it comes to such situations due to how much they themselves have sacrificed.
Supporters spend a lot of their hard earned money to be present to cheer on their team and so want to see positive football or at least a result to compensate them.
