Manchester United star Joel Pereira has revealed just why he joined the club, claiming that once he did arrive at Old Trafford, he immediately felt at home.
The youngster is third in line for the goalkeeping position behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero and is highly rated by his manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese boss once stated that Pereira was the best Portuguese goalkeeper of his generation which is certainly high praise for someone who perhaps hasn’t featured enough in the starting XI.
Unfortunately for the keeper, he has two fully fledged internationals ahead of him in the pecking order while most clubs only have one for their first choice.
However, there have been rumours that Romero is looking to move on in search of regular first team football as he fears for his spot in the Argentina national team.
According to the club’s official website, Joel said: “It came about when I played a game with Switzerland [youth team] and I had a few scouts who came to my agent with offers from different clubs.
“I think United are the team that stood out the most. My agent knew a bit about how the clubs works, and a bit about the Academy here and he just told me that, for myself and my development, United was the best Academy for young players.
“I just thought about my future and thought United would be the best next step for me. When I came here, I knew straight away that’s my place where I have to be. It felt immediately like home.
“The staff and players welcomed me very well and it felt good. It was a good challenge for me. The club helped me straight away. I knew in January that I was coming in June and, during this six months, they prepared everything very well.
“The family and the house, everything. When I came, I was already settled and could just focus on football – nothing else outside of football.”
Unfortunately there have also been reports that the Red Devils are interested in signing Stoke’s Lee Grant as a third choice goalkeeper in order to send Pereira out on loan.
It certainly would make sense for him to go out temporarily to get the necessary match time to develop as once he’s back, he’ll have the huge task of attempting to overthrow De Gea as the first choice.
