Marouane Fellaini has rejected the chance to play for Arsenal and instead agreed a new contract with Manchester United which keeps him at the club until 2020, according to Yahoo Sport‘s Duncan Castles.
The Belgian’s contract expires in three days and it has been expected for some time that he would depart after five seasons at Old Trafford having failed to strike an agreement with the club over a new financial package.
Fellaini, who could be in line to start against England, revealed yesterday he would make an announcement regarding his future on Sunday.
And according to Castles, the first to break the news about Diogo Dalot, that announcement, to the horror of most supporters, will be that he has agreed a two-year contract with Man United, ruling out the prospect of Jose Mourinho adding a second, younger box-to-box midfielder during the window.
The way United have spent quite literally all season trying to convince Fellaini – who only managed four starts in seven months – to stay at the club at the expense of signing a younger, more mobile midfielder goes beyond the realms of mere insanity.
All that time in negotiating rooms with Fellaini’s entourage, offering more and more money each time, could have been spent doing pretty much anything else. Perhaps lining up a half decent midfielder; perhaps trying to convince Anthony Martial to stay; perhaps watering some plants. Anything would have been more valuable.
No other top club in the world would spend that much time trying to convince a player of Fellaini’s calibre to stay. That United have is a symbol of the conservatism creeping into this club under the leadership of Mourinho.
