Manchester United look set to announce their first signing of the summer after booking Brazilian midfielder Fred in for a medical on Monday.
A deal thought to be worth £52m has been agreed with Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk for the 25-year-old, who is expected to be the first of two incoming midfielders this summer.
Fred is seen as an ideal replacement for the retired Michael Carrick, whilst Marouane Fellaini‘s inevitable departure leaves Jose Mourinho’s midfield options at risk of being fairly bare.
He was used as a second-half substitute in Brazil’s 2-0 World Cup warm-up win over Croatia at Anfield on Sunday afternoon and left the London-bound squad to head to Manchester ahead of the transfer’s completion.
Fred has impressed since joining Shakhtar from Internacional in 2013 and has drawn up comparisons with Manchester City’s Fernandinho over his 156 appearances for the club.
It’s expected that he will travel down to the capital as soon as he’s become a Man United player to continue his preparations for the summer World Cup in Russia with Brazil, one of the tournament frontrunners.
Upon his return, United fans will be drooling over the prospect of a midfield including Fred, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba for the 2018-19 season as summer signing no. 1 is just over the horizon.
