Lukaku sends message to these two youngsters ahead of pre-season

Romelu Lukaku has encouraged youngsters Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes to train hard under Jose Mourinho ahead of Manchester United’s pre-season.

Chong has been the club’s standout youngster this season, breaking into Ricky Spragia’s Under 23 side and earning the ‘Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year’ award for his performances.

Gomes, who won the award the year before, spent a frustrating period on the sidelines but nonetheless impressed in the UEFA Youth League and enjoyed a bright cameo against Yeovil Town in January.

They will hopefully receive a chance to impress in the first team over pre-season, and Lukaku, one of Mourinho’s favourite pupils, has told them to place emphasis on giving everything in training.

“I’d say just enjoy it,” he said. “It’s very simple with the manager: if you train well, you will get the opportunities to play.”

“I think Scott [McTominay] and Marcus [Rashford] are the great examples of that: if you work hard you will get a chance to play.

“So for the guys that come in, I’d just say make sure you deliver a positive impression on the manager and that you want to work for the team because it’s all about the team.”

The World Cup provides the likes of Chong and Gomes with a chance for genuine minutes on the pitch over pre-season. Any of Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Fred, David de Gea, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof could miss the early stages due commitments to their national sides. Anyone who goes past the second round will still be on holiday for the clashes with Club America and San Jose Earthquakes.

That could mean a number of vacant spots for Gomes and Chong, whose combined zip going forward and precision in front of goal has enchanted supporters for some time. Many wanted them to feature in those pointless, painfully mundane final Premier League clashes against Brighton, West Ham and Watford. They certainly deserve a real chance in the summer.
