Argentina fans and pundits called on Ever Banega to come off the bench and make the difference in the midfield in their hammering at the hands of Croatia, but boss Jorge Sampaoli went with other options. However, Gunners fans could soon be seeing the 29-year old gracing the turf at the Emirates Stadium if a report from Spanish source Estadio Deportivo is to believed.
The transfer link to Banega is also followed up in the Mirror, with the report saying that Arsenal’s new boss Unai Emery has been a direct call to the creative Argentine midfielder who starred for him during stints at both Valencia and Sevilla. Emery apparently wanted to sign Banega while at Paris Saint-Germain but it never materialised.
The Mirror point out that Unai Emery wants Banega to play just behind the three in what is expected to be a 4-2-3-1 formation heading into the new season – with Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette the likely front-three.
If indeed Banega is looking for a new challenge next season then being reunited with his former boss is likely to be the leading option – with the Argentine lifting the Europa League twice under Arsenal’s new Spanish manager (while at Sevilla).
The Mirror additionally say that the agent of the Argentine, who’s time at the World Cup could end this week, has already spoken to contacts at Arsenal so there’s every chance that this one could get moving fast once the country’s time in Russia concludes.
