Edwin Van der Sar has stated what he believes Manchester United need to do in the summer transfer window in order to compete with city rivals Manchester City next season.
City stormed their way to become Premier League champions with a record-breaking 100 points in the 2017-18 campaign under Pep Guardiola and finished 19 points ahead of second-placed Man United.
The 2018-19 season is an eagerly anticipated one, and great United goalkeeper Van der Sar has revealed that the club must make a few more signings before the deadline if they want to compete.
“Maybe it’s more difficult, now more money is coming into the game,” he said. “Others are also catching up a lot. Maybe richer owners are investing larger amounts of money into the squad.
“Hopefully United can catch up. [They] finished second, lost the FA Cup final. This year they need another two or three signings to stay a little bit more on that level with City than this year.”
United kicked off their summer spending by bringing 19-year-old FC Porto right-back Diogo Dalot to Old Trafford for £19m, but he’s not expected to be instant starter under Jose Mourinho with Antonio Valencia expected to be named captain.
A fee in excess of £50m has been agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk for Brazilian midfielder Fred, who is seen as the retiring Michael Carrick‘s long-term replacement, but the club are having to wait for the player’s work permit application to go through been officially announcing him.
Mourinho is said to want a centre-back, left-back and back-up striker for no. 9 Romelu Lukaku ahead of his third season in charge, so only time will tell who he eventually decides to bring to the club.
