David de Gea‘s shaky form for the Spanish national team at the World Cup continued during a 2-2 draw with Morocco on Monday night.
The Spaniard had already come under scrutiny following a serious blunder against Portugal and let a shot slip under him against Iran, only to be saved by VAR.
His tendency to struggle with one-on-ones was exposed last night, with Khalid Boutaïb taking advantage of a mistake in midfield and rolling the ball through the Manchester United keeper’s legs.
He did manage to atone by stopping Boutaib from close range after the striker broke free once again in the first half as Spain, despite a performance riddled with errors, finished top of Group B following Iran’s late equaliser against Portugal.
De Gea simply doesn’t look like the same player in a Spain kit. He is a far cry from Man United’s ‘Player of the Season’, making jaw dropping saves as if they were goal kicks. He has let two easy shots slip under him and found himself flat-footed against Boutaib.
Where is this neurosis coming from? The answer could be simple: he just doesn’t enjoy playing for Spain. De Gea, after all, has made his feelings towards the Spanish media known on several occasions; the sacking of Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup would not have helped anything.
He may be playing with fellow countrymen, including world class talents like Isco and Andres Iniesta, but you can De Gea feels most at home in Manchester.
