Player ratings: Every Man United player absolutely awful, big changes needed in the summer

David de Gea 6 – Once again the only Manchester United player who can hold his head high, or at least not feel sorry for himself. Made another wonderful diving save from Glenn Murray in the first half and stopped a one-on-one. Will be furious at his defenders for letting Brighton’s goal happen.

Matteo Darmian 4 – Just kind of meandered along, hardly a presence in the game until his total lack of pace was exposed for Brighton’s goal. Miles below United standard.

Chris Smalling 6 – One of the better defenders whilst far from perfect. Kept the hosts at bay in the first half but once again found himself out of position on occasion as the game went on.

Marcos Rojo 5 – Looked understandably rusty having not featured for United since February. Positioning was off and Brighton – Anthony Knockaert especially – looked too quick for him.

Ashley Young 5 – Another painfully one dimensional performance at left back from the Englishman. Slow on the ball and lacked any final product.

Nemanja Matic 5 – Even the Serbian, such a reliable source of calm throughout the season, looked sloppy tonight, failing to move the ball with his usual urgency and precision.

Marouane Fellaini 5 – That certainly isn’t what playing for a new contract looks like. Gave some physical presence but, aside from that, his role in the middle seemed totally unclear.

Paul Pogba 6 – The Frenchman was just as sloppy as his teammates but at least he looked relatively up for the occasion. Never shirked from possession and produced some decent moments on the ball – but ones that ultimately came to nothing.

Anthony Martial 5 – Never got going. This was a chance to show some vitality going forward but Martial was rarely testing defenders, drifting further and further back to receive the ball, losing any threat in the process.

Juan Mata 5 – His function in the attacking three really wasn’t clear. The 30-year-old was the only attacking player to pass relatively accurately but he only seemed to pick up the ball in totally unthreatening positions.

Marcus Rashford 4 – Squandered a golden opportunity to square the ball for Martial in the second half, hardly ever held the ball up, and passed the ball as if he were wearing a blindfold. You can see why Romelu Lukaku is firmly ahead of him in the pecking order.
