Manchester United target Fred confirms he’ll leave Shakhtar Donetsk this summer

Manchester United target and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has confirmed his desire to “make a bigger leap” to another club in the summer.

Jose Mourinho has made clear his desire to replace Michael Carrick, who played his final game for Man United last week and will join the coaching staff for next season.

Man United have pinpointed Fred, a regular in Shakhtar’s midfield since 2013, as an ideal replacement after Manchester City withdrew their interest in him.

Speaking earlier this week, the 25-year-old confirmed he would take the next step to a bigger club over the summer.

I’m very happy at Shakhtar. I’ve been working well here but it has been five years,” he said.

“I made it clear to the club that I was very happy here but I want to make a bigger leap in my career. There are other clubs interested in England and France. I want to make a bigger leap, I made it clear to the club.

“Now I just have to wait to get through the World Cup and see which is the best destination. I think I have to change a little. I have dreams of playing in major clubs in Europe. I made it clear that it’s my moment.

“The club are reluctant to release (me). I have a contract until 2021. As soon as I come back from the World Cup we will sit down, talk and look at the options.”

Shakhtar’s chief executive Sergei Palkin noted earlier this year that he was sure Fred would move to a Manchester club, which seems to suggest that United have a clear run at the midfielder given City’s change of emphasis towards looking to sign Jorginho from Napoli.

But Fred’s claim that he has interest from France essentially confirms that Paris Saint Germain, the kings of last summer’s transfer window, are also keen on launching a bid in the summer having grown over-reliant on Adrien Rabiot.

Ed Woodward and Co will need to work fast and smart to ensure they get their man and give PSG a bloody nose in the window, sending out a statement to the rest of Europe in the process.
