Arsenal have included Jose Mourinho’s assistant Rui Faria in a 14-man shortlist of contenders to replace Arsene Wenger over the summer, according to reports.
The Frenchman will leave the Emirates in the summer after 22 years in charge, leaving a huge void at the club ahead of next season.
Faria has been part of Mourinho’s coaching staff in 2001 and became his right hand man for the 2003/04 season, during which they won the Champions League with Porto.
And according to the Sun, Faria has been included on a shortlist of potential replacements for Wenger in the summer, with Liverpool assistant coach Željko Buvač also emerging as a reported target.
Arsenal supporters were probably hoping to be linked with Germany coach Joachim Low, or possibly Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri, but instead find themselves punting for managers who haven’t actually managed a team before.
I mean, what better way to combat the loss of Wenger – a man with untold experience at the top level and whose departure will leave an unprecedented dearth of managerial knowhow – than by hiring a fitness coach in Faria?
Seeing this unfold would be quite hilarious, but there is no chance of Mourinho letting Faria, responsible for reinforcing Mourinho’s managerial ideology on the training ground, go anywhere ahead of the 2018/19 season.
