Jose Mourinho has noted that Manchester United’s insipid 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion explains why some players don’t regularly make his starting XI.
Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini all received rare starts as Jose Mourinho handed more senior players rests.
What they came up with was a monstrosity, utterly insipid, devoid of efficiency or even any semblance of direction, and Man United deservedly lost 1-0 to yet another promoted team.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho stressed that performances like tonight were why some players didn’t start.

Jose Mourinho: “Maybe now you understand why I play some players more than others and you won’t ask all the time why A, B and C don’t play more.” #MUFC

There has been a constant theme this season of the 55-year-old lacking a measure of trust in his players. Last season, he was still figuring things out. This season, he is starting to make some conclusions.
Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku are players he trusts and therefore starts. Paul Pogba gets in because of his talent. The decision making of those players and their capacity to deliver in clutch games this season has given Mourinho a core set of starters he can work with.
The rest, however, don’t seem to be much interest to him, and they will only regress further as a result.
