Manchester United academy midfielder Dion McGhee has signed his first professional contract at the club.
McGhee burst onto the under-18 scene in the second half of the 2017-18 season and made 13 appearances for Kieran McKenna’s North Division title-winning side.
The 17-year-old has joined team-mates Brandon Williams, Ethan Galbraith and James Garner by signing on the dotted line at the Aon Training Complex.
Speaking to MUTV after confirming his professional status, McGhee said: “It’s a proud moment for me and my family. I’m really happy to get the contract signed. I’ve worked hard and listened to my coaches, listening to the advice and just enjoying what I do.”
Born in Oldham, McGhee, who can play as a centre-midfielder or fit in behind the striker, has described himself as creative and versatile with an eye for goal.
On who has influenced him best in his career so far, he explained: “My family and my coaches have helped me kick on and improved me as a person. [United have] the best facilities in the country. What a place and what a club Manchester United is.”
McGhee bagged two assists in his first campaign as part of the under-18s, and with key players like Angel Gomes likely to play a bigger part with the under-23s next term, he could get a bigger chance to impress.
“This [signing a first professional contract] is just a confidence-booster for next season,” he added. “I’ve already got my goals and targets, now it’s just [about] pushing on and keep achieving. It’s time to relax a bit now but I’ll come back hungrier than ever and ready to go next season.”
It is expected that McGhee will be playing under a new manager throughout the 2018-19 season though, with current boss McKenna set to join Jose Mourinho’s first team backroom staff.
