Michael Carrick has taken to social media to express his gratitude to Jose Mourinho after receiving a special recognition award at the Manchester United ‘Player of the Year’ awards ceremony on Tuesday night.
The midfielder will hang up his boots at the end of the season after 12 years at Old Trafford and join up with Mourinho’s coaching staff for the 2018/19 campaign.
Carrick was given a fitting tribute at the ‘Player of the Year’ ceremony, with Mourinho gifting the captain with a coaching jersey, a whistle, and some advil for the headaches.
He has taken to social media to thank those who played a part in handing him an unexpected tribute.
A special surprise for me last night. Honoured to be recognised by @ManUtd. Big thank you for the amazing reception I received on stage, to Jose for the gifts and to all those who sent me the video messages, especially Louise and Jacey I had no idea. I’m so very lucky pic.twitter.com/kb4s4YJsIe

Carrick will receive one more runout in a United shirt before he moves to the dugout next season, most likely against Watford on May 13, and while the game itself means nothing it will serve as a chance for the watching world to appreciate the simple genius and charm of seeing this man play the beautiful game.
For the past 12 years many have ignored Carrick’s metronomic, calming presence on the pitch, even during the 2012/13 campaign where he was just as instrumental to the club’s title success as Robin van Persie, but it will be different in ten days time.
The emotion that every United fan will feel as they watch Carrick, happily sitting at the base of midfield, threading the ball around the pitch like he always has done will be hard to describe. We will never, ever have a player – or man – like him at our club again.
