Ashley Young has expressed his dismay at what was an abysmal performance from Manchester United against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Jose Mourinho handed a series of fringe players chances to impress and what he saw was diabolical: no accuracy on the ball, no zip, no real semblance of a plan.
They deservedly lost 1-0 in the end, with Pascal Groß heading the winner, and Mourinho was notably disappointed with the attitude of some players in the aftermath.
And Young, speaking on MUTV, agreed that United’s performance was not good enough from start to finish.
“It wasn’t good enough from the first whistle to the end,” he said. “We put pressure on them at the end, but you can’t start like that and expect to win. It is disappointing and we have to dust ourselves down and prepare for the next game.”
United have lost every away game to the promoted Premier League sides this season. 1-0 to Newcastle and Brighton, 2-1 to Huddersfield Town. That, to me, is no coincidence.
There have been times this season where United’s attitude has been excellent: resilient, efficient, working together, bullying the opposition. When they have to, United can play.
But when they don’t really have to perform – second place is all but guaranteed anyway – the attitude simply nosedives. For any club wanting to secure big trophies, that simply isn’t good enough.
