Arsene Wenger has spoken about the red card picked up by Mohamed Elneny and whether he will appeal the decision (via Arsenal.com).
It was a fascinating end to what was an exciting match.
The on-field disagreement between Jack Wilshere and Jack Stephens resulted in the latter getting sent off and another red card shown to Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny.
The Egyptian midfielder was shown a straight red card for what, replays showed, was a push on Southampton’s Cedric Soares.
It looked harsh and many Arsenal fans wondered if this decision could be the subject of an appeal from Arsenal.
After the match, Arsene Wenger was asked if he will appeal the decision.
“I have to see it again,” Wenger said.
“I haven’t seen it well enough to tell you. If possible, we’ll look at it tomorrow and see if we have grounds for an appeal or not. I don’t know yet.
“Elneny, I was a bit surprised that he was sent off.
“He’s not an aggressive player. Has he touched the player in his face or not? I don’t know if he’s done it. I think it was accidental.”
It looked like a harsh decision but it’s unclear if any appeal would be successful. Mohamed Elneny has played well in recent weeks and his loss in the Premier League will be felt.
