The stats behind Chelsea's downfall this season

After a heavy defeat to the hands of London rivals Tottenham and a home draw against West Ham, Chelsea look set to miss out on Champoins League football next season.

So where has it gone wrong for the champions of England? Have the Blues relied too heavily on their new signings?

The champions sold Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid after a spat with Antonio Conte. Younger players such as the likes of Kenedy are also out on loan and impressing for Newcastle at the moment. Dominic Solanke was sold to rivals Liverpool for a small fee while Nathan Ake moved to Bournemouth, alongside substitute goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Tammy Abraham, Kurt Zouma, Michy Batshuayi and Ruben Loftus Cheek are also away from the club on loan. These have been their key departures this season not to mention the sale of their midfield general Nemanja Matic who is having a fantastic season at Manchester United.

Last season Chelsea scored 85 goals and conceded only 33, they averaged 2.24 goals per match and conceded 0.87 goals per match whereas so far this campaign they have not only scored less but also conceded more. They have scored only 53 and already have conceded 30 goals which puts them at an average of 1.71 goals scored per match to 0.97 goals conceded per match. This implies that not only have they been weakened up front but also have lost key players in defence.

If you compare Costa and Matic, who are arguably Chelsea’s biggest sales to their replacements it is easy to see where they have been lacking.

Costa scored 20 goals in his last season at the Bridge averaging at 0.57 goals per match with 111 shots on goal that season and a shooting accuracy of 38%. He averaged about 29.54 passes per game last season and created six big chances along with seven assists.

Alvaro Morata, on the other hand, has scored 11 goals in his first season averaging 0.44 goals per match but has only 68 shots on goal and he averages at 19.08 passes per game.

Although Morata has a shooting accuracy of 44% and has five assists. Morata, however, has missed 15 big chances so far whereas Costa in spite of playing more games has missed only 12 big chances.

Michy Batshuayi, who has been on fire for Borussia Dortmund, scoring seven times in nine Bundesliga appearances could have solved the Blues attacking woes had he not been loaned out to the German side. His replacement Oliver Giroud has failed to score in the Premier League for his new club.

The departure of Matic has hugely cost the champions. This season the Serbian midfielder has 70.75 passes per match along with 151 accurate long balls played. He has had 59 interceptions so far accompanied with 55 clearances. He has recovered the ball 287 times and won 185 duels and 55 aerial battles.

His replacement, Tiemoue Bakayoko has made 53 tackles, 29 interceptions and clearances each. Bakayoko has recovered the ball 147 times, won 137 duels and 33 aerial battles. He has also had one error leading to a goal. He has had 37.48 passes per match and 40 accurate long balls which shows the hole in midfield created by the sale of Matic.

Chelsea are in need of replacements for Gary Cahill and David Luiz, both have fallen out of favour this season.  The decision to sell Nathan Ake and loan Zouma may have come back to haunt the Blues.

Had they have not been loaned out or sold the club may not have needed to sign the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Emerson Palmieri or Davide Zappacosta who haven’t done enough.

Has the policy of buying young prospects and repeatedly loaning them out without giving them any time in the first team finally come back to bite them?
