Eric Bailly was not injured for Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur but suffered with an illness during the week that led to Jose Mourinho leaving him out of the squad.
The Ivorian was not included in the squad against West Bromwich Albion but did receive a place on the bench for the 2-0 win over AFC Bournemouth three days later.
But he was nowhere to be seen at Wembley, with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling featuring at centre-back instead.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Bailly was vomiting shortly before the defeat to West Brom and Mourinho, despite the defender feeling well enough to travel to Bournemouth, did not feel prepared to risk him in such a big game against Spurs.
Supporters will be glad to hear that Bailly, who spent three months on the sidelines with an ankle injury earlier this season, has not picked up another affliction ahead of the closing stages of the campaign.
But the regularity with which Bailly misses out on games is starting to become a worry. United have played 51 games this season and the 24-year-old has been sidelined for 26 of them.
Seeing such a vital player continue to miss out on the starting XI is deeply frustrating. United are always a better team with the Ivorian at the heart of its defence but at the moment it almost feels as if he doesn’t play for the club. Mourinho can only pray that his fortunes are different next season.
