Roy Keane sends message to Manchester United ahead of derby

Roy Keane has noted that Manchester City do not deserve to be regarded as a “great team” following their 3-0 humbling at the hands of Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s team were blown away in a whirlwind first 20 minutes by a rampant Liverpool attack, with Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane putting the home side in an almost unassailable position heading into the second leg.

City will have to shake off the demons of Wednesday, alongside making a series of changes, ahead of their clash with Manchester United on Saturday, where they have a chance to wrap up the Premier League title.

And Keane, speaking on ITV following the game, was quick to note that City are yet to establish themselves as a truly great team.

“There’s been a lot of hype about this Man City team, talk about them being a great team,” he said. “A reality check for this team tonight, they have a lot to do yet before they’re regarded as a great team.”

The worst thing United could possibly do at the Ethiad is assume the same inferiority complex that plagued their tepid performance against the league leaders in December.

It was as if they accepted City were better, more diverse in their attacking threat, and they allowed themselves to be proved right.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side displayed last night that this is a side, whilst unquestionably talented, can lose their cool and fall apart in the face of pressure situations. And following their capitulation at Anfield there will be even greater scrutiny on how they go about their performance on Saturday.

United simply cannot afford to make life easy for them in what promises to be a truly momentous occasion.
