Ian Wright believes Jose Mourinho would prefer to keep Marcus Rashford over Anthony Martial if he had to let one of them leave in the summer.
The Frenchman, despite a sensational first half of the season, has only made two Premier League starts since the January arrival of Alexis Sanchez.
Reliable outlet RMC Sport claimed on Tuesday that Martial wanted a new challenge in the summer, while completely baseless reports about Rashford wanting to leave also came out.
And Wright, reflecting on the pair, noted that Mourinho would prefer to keep Rashford and dispense with Martial.
“He has almost fallen off a cliff with Mourinho and if he had to let one of them [Martial or Rashford] go it would probably be Martial,” he said.
There is a growing feeling among supporters and the media that there exists a kind of rivalry between Martial and Mourinho.
But this does not hold any weight. The boss has trusted him in big games this term – most recently against Chelsea at home – and we have seen before that reports claiming Martial wants out after a period away from the sidelines are simply not true.
That said, Martial’s peripheral role since the arrival of Alexis is worrying – mainly because it just doesn’t need to happen. Mourinho would surely benefit from devising a system which plays to the strengths of both during the latter stages of the campaign.
