Chelsea picked up their second European win of the season as the Blues cruised past Ligue 1 side Rennes at Stamford Bridge.
Lining up without summer arrival Kai Havertz, who has tested positive for COVID-19. Frank Lampard’s side were in control from the outset and duly took the lead after 10 minutes via the penalty spot.
Another new signing in Timo Werner stepped up to take the spot-kick, having earned it when he was tripped by Henrique Dabert, firing his effort low and hard past the visiting goalkeeper.
Shortly before half-time, Chelsea were awarded another penalty, this time for handball as a shot deflected onto Dalbert’s arm. The Brazilian left-back was given a second yellow card for the offence he knew little about, and the French side were down to ten men.
Chelsea’s new first choice from 12 yards, Werner stepped up once again, despite Jorginho being on the field. The German smashed this one into the top left-hand corner for his seventh goal of the season.
After half-time and with Lampard’s side in complete control, Tammy Abraham got on the scoresheet to make it 3-0.
The Blues boss rang the changes and five substitutions in relatively quick succession disrupted the rhythm somewhat but enough was enough and the match ended with a three-goal deficit and a fifth consecutive clean sheet.
Top of Group E and on the up in the Premier League, it’s been a positive few weeks for the club.
Here’s how we rated the home side…
