Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Manchester United will have to play like Liverpool if they want to have any hopes of beating Manchester City.
The last thing fans of the club will want to hear is that their team must play like their fiercest of rivals but perhaps there’s some truth to it.
The Reds humiliated City at Anfield in the Champions League and there’s certainly no doubt Jose Mourinho would’ve been watching the match to identify any weaknesses.
Jurgen Klopp is known for making his players play at a high intensity and it was their counter-attacking that took apart Pep Guardiola’s men.
Mourinho is less intense but he does have a fondness for counter-attacking and Redknapp believes he has to step up the gears if he wants a similar result.
Jamie wrote in his Sky Sports column: “There will be a bit of fear in that United side because it really is the worst-case scenario to get beaten and see your rivals celebrate.
“That’s why I think they’ve got to treat it as a game they need to win. By sitting back against City, you are asking for trouble and it ends up being a slow death.
“I think United need to get after them, just as Liverpool did on Wednesday. United can look at City now and know they are not invincible, but they need to make it uncomfortable for them and start as strongly as Liverpool did.”
Jose is known for his big game tactical masterclasses and he’ll certainly have to pull one out of a hat to secure a win at the Etihad.
The Portuguese manager has a known love for the 4-2-3-1 formation but is unlikely to employ it against the Sky Blues on Saturday.
It’s said that Jose Mourinho doesn’t trust his players enough to play such an attacking formation in big games and perhaps there’s truth to that.
The Red Devils’ defence will certainly need some protection against Manchester City’s players and so there’ll be no surprises if they set up in a 4-3-3 formation instead.
Not only will the defence be better protected but Mourinho’s midfield will be in a stronger position to avoid being dominated in as they have been multiple times in the past.
