Paul Pogba has spoken of his supposed feud with Jose Mourinho for the first time, insisting he has absolutely no problem with the 55-year-old.
The Frenchman has endured a difficult period of late and, ahead of impressing against Swansea City, had only made four starts from the past 11 games.
Mourinho was notably prickly when asked about Pogba’s form ahead of the game, telling reporters to “ask him” about why he wasn’t performing.
But the Frenchman, speaking in an interview this weekend, made it clear that talk of a feud between himself and the boss was pure fabrication.
“It’s true [being benched] has never happened to me, but it can strengthen me,” he said. “You have to go through these periods to make you stronger.”
“There is no problem with Mourinho. It’s not me who picks the team. Ask the coach if you want to know why I play less. I respect his choices.”
Pogba’s online presence and ebullient demeanour seems to infuriate a large portion of the commentariat, and in the process we often forget that the 25-year-old, like any footballer at this level, is a faultless professional. You can’t play in the Champions League final and World Cup if you aren’t.
So the idea of Pogba sulking, throwing his toys out the pram, in response to being left on the bench is just a fantasy of supporters, really. Football doesn’t work like that; if anything, the last few months could help Pogba mature further.
