Marcus Rashford has hit back at claims suggesting he wants to leave Manchester United by noting it was a “dream” to play for the club he supports.
The youngster has made more appearances than any other Man United player since the arrival of Jose Mourinho in 2016 (97).
Nonetheless, completely baseless reports surfaced on Tuesday suggested that Rashford, left on the bench for the derby, had become ‘disillusioned’ with his manager over a lack of minutes on the pitch.
Speaking to the club’s official programme, Rashford made it clear that this notion couldn’t be further from the truth.
“A lot of people have that dream, so you’re not only doing it for you; you’re doing it for a lot of people that you might not even know, but there are a lot of people who had the dream of playing for their local team when they were young,” he said.
“So I think you are playing not only for yourself and for the club, but for all the people that are living that dream through you.”
Rashford projects a relatively plaintive demeanour on the surface but you can see through his rapturous style on the ball, and indeed through his recognition of the uniqueness of his position, that he firmly wears his heart on his sleeve.
The notion tha Rashford is just another petulant, high profile footballer who wants a bigger pay cheque and a bigger role in the side is just nonsense. He is one of the humblest characters you’ll come across who, you can tell, feel privileged to be where he is – something no doubt reinforced during his education under Nicky Butt prior to breaking into the team in February 2016.
