Manchester City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne has handed Antonio Valencia and David de Gea places in his PFA ‘Team of the Season’.
Valencia has enjoyed another solid season as the club’s de facto captan, delivering a stream of disciplined, energetic performances at right back.
And De Gea has further cemented himself as the best keeper in the world by claiming 16 clean sheets this term – his highest total since arriving at Old Trafford in 2011.
De Bruyne showed a picture of his ‘Team of the Season’ on BT Sport to Des Kelly and it surprisingly included the United pair. The Belgian, at least in the opinion of this contributor, deserves the ‘Player of the Season’ award having been at the centre of Man City’s relentless march to a Premier League trophy this year, but he has personally opted for Mohamed Salah of Liverpool.
“I voted for Salah for footballer of the year because he deserves it,” he said. “If it’s nobody from our team I think Salah deserves it.”
Manchester City’s Kyle Walker is a more popular choice for best right-back this season but Valencia, given the regularity with which he produces composed displays, deserves to be mentioned in the same bracket. That he has slipped under the radar is, if anything, a testament to his sheer consistency.
