Jose Mourinho assesses Paul Pogba’s MOTM performance vs Bournemouth

Jose Mourinho named Paul Pogba as his Man of the Match for Manchester United in a comfortable 2-0 victory against AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday evening.

Pogba was subbed off after 79 minutes with Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur likely in Mourinho’s mind, and the travelling Man United fans showed their appreciation for the midfielder.

The Frenchman was widely criticised for a poor performance at the weekend in United’s 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion, having had a near-perfect second-half display against Manchester City in a 3-2 comeback win the weekend before.

Mourinho hailed Pogba, after being told the 25-year-old was named Man of the Match.

“I’m not very good on Man of the Match, especially because I am a team manager, I’m not a big fan of it,” Mourinho insisted to start with.

“But [Pogba] played very well.”

After Pogba’s storming show against City at the Etihad Stadium, people were hoping it could prove a turning point for him.

Yet his efforts against West Brom were poor, and, as Mourinho said, over-complicated.

“I would say against Man City he was phenomenal, “ Mourinho continued, “also because of the goals, but today he was very very good, so I would say a good choice [for Man of the Match].”

Pogba, once more, was starting the game having been heavily criticised. For all his faults and inconsistency, he has a great ability to ignore the criticism, or in fact use it to spur him on.

However, for the potentially world-class midfielder Pogba could be, having two great games out of three and one terrible performance, is frustrating.

He has got to find the consistency to unlock teams such as Bournemouth on a regular basis.
