Jesse Lingard has backed Michael Carrick to be a managerial success in the future.
The 36-year-old, who has had his sights on coaching for some time, will join Jose Mourinho’s staff ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
He has recently been in the dugout for Manchester United’s win over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final, alongside playing a fundamental role in the dressing room at half time of the 3-2 win at the Ethiad earlier this month.
And Lingard, speaking on Soccer AM, was adamant – like anyone you ask this question to – that Carrick would make an excellent manager.
“Michael Carrick I think, he’s already starting that next job title now, so I think Michael,” he said.
“He is the most experienced one in the dressing room and I think he would be a good manager.
He has been doing it (showing videos to help them) with a lot of players, Rom as well. I think it’s good there’s someone in the dressing room we can go to for tips and advice, and he’s always there for the younger players as well.”
There aren’t many players who you could predict to become a managerial success purely by watching them play but Carrick is unquestionably one of them.
Nobody sees a game as well, with such simultaneous complexity and simplicity, as Carrick, who has for over a decade served as this side’s metronome at the base of midfield, seeing everything and dictating the pace of a game.
He is not one to overcomplicate things. He is a man of brutal honesty who, just like Sir Alex Ferguson, has that special quality of being able to deliver an important message in just a few words. United as a collective will be better off with him sitting in the dugout next season.
