Swansea City striker Tammy Abraham has noted he was “surprised” to see David de Gea make two astonishing saves from him in quick succession during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.
Abraham, who came on at half time, brought down a ball into the box and turned superbly away from Victor Lindelof and fired a lethal shot towards the top right hand corner, only for De Gea to calmly push it away.
Seconds later, he met a cross from the left hand side with a pin-point drive heading for the bottom corner, but the Spaniard easily dealt with it.
Speaking after the game, Abraham was quick to hail De Gea, now with 16 clean sheets this season, as the best keeper in the division.
“De Gea proved he is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League,” he said.
“I was surprised he saved my two shots. They were fantastic saves because I thought I had scored and it would have been great to score at least one of them.”
It is a hallmark of De Gea’s greatness that he continues to pull off saves that, in spite of all the stunning stops made in the past, nonetheless leave you stunned, breathless, wondering just how he got to that.
Abraham’s first shot was an example of exactly that. The way he turned from right to left made it seem as if the youngster would fire towards the far corner, but instead he chose the nearer one – giving De Gea less time to react.
But it didn’t matter. Nobody in the world is better at stopping shots than De Gea and the Spaniard proved it again with another save that only he could make.
