With many Chelsea fans now having all but kissed their Champions League hopes goodbye, Alonso was under little delusion was to the source of the reality staring one of Europe’s richest clubs in the face.
Speaking to the club’s website, Alonso said:
I think we aren’t having the same luck as last year,
Also, other teams have improved and maybe we don’t have the consistency we had last year.
The defending champions are far off the pace that saw them total 93 points last season, as Conte hoisted the Premier League trophy at his first attempt.
However, fast-forwarded one year, and rumours of the Italian’s sacking are quietly stirring around the club.
Despite the distractions, Alonso is focused on the task at hand:
We have to stand up now and fight until the end,
We are all disappointed, but we have to fight until the end of the season. Winning all seven games has to be the target and then we have to wait for other teams to lose. It’s not going to be easy but it’s what we have to do.
