Pep Guardiola once again hit out at Martin Atkinson’s failure to award a penalty for Ashley Young‘s challenge on Sergio Aguero following his side’s exit from the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Englishman, who could have given a penalty away earlier in the game for a handball, crashed into Aguero as the striker raced to meet the ball in the box.
It was, by all accounts, surprising that no penalty was given, even if Young did get a foot to the ball in the process.
Guardiola sarcastically claimed that Aguero dived in the lead-up to his side’s meeting with Liverpool, and following his side’s 2-1 defeat at the Ethiad he felt compelled to once again bring it up.
“It’s the same from the last game, against United,” he said. “Seventy-eight minutes, the most incredible penalty I ever saw in my life, and Martin Atkinson didn’t want to whistle.”
Football is a strange game. Just a week ago, City were favourites to reach the Champions League semi-finals, widely regarded as the best in the competition, and had the once in a lifetime opportunity of wrapping up the title against United beckoning as well.
And now, following three straight defeats, their season appears to have hit a wall. Yes, they will win the league at a canter – and deservedly so – but their celebrations will be overshadowed by the memory of Jose Mourinho ruining their title party and, just three days later, losing 5-1 to Liverpool on aggregate.
