Gianluigi Buffon has claimed that Jan Oblak, Keylor Navas, Ederson, Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois are all better goalkeepers than David de Gea.
The Spaniard is enjoying his finest season in a Manchester United since joining in 2011, with his total of 16 Premier League clean sheets already a career best.
He has made a litany of crucial stops throughout the season, most recently from Sergio Aguero in the dying moments of Man United’s 3-2 win at the Ethiad last weekend.
But Buffon, speaking ahead of his side’s exit from the Champions League, did not feel he was worthy of gracing the top five.
“Not taking into account Italian keepers, I would say Oblak, Navas, Ter Stegen, Ederson, Neuer and Courtois,” he said. “I hope I did not forget anybody.”
If you suggest with actual seriousness that Navas is better than De Gea, then you cannot be surprised when the footballing gods conspire to give you, playing in what could be your last Champions League game, glorious false hope by the Costa Rican making an absolute howler to bring the tie level, only for the referee to award Real Madrid a penalty and send you off in the last minute of the game.
I am personally a big fan of Buffon, but I have no sympathy for him here whatsoever.
