Barcelona are in no rush to renew Samuel Umtiti’s contract ahead of the summer amid frustration in the club’s hierarchy at the Frenchman’s lack of application in games as negotiations have rumbled on, according to reports from Spain.
The defender’s current deal expires in 2021 but concerns have been raised at his release clause of just £54m, which has prompted interest from Manchester United and other clubs.
Umtiti has emphasised his desire to remain at the Camp Nou but there are few signs of progress in talks over a new deal, with Barcelona reluctant to satisfy his demands of around £8m a year following the arrival of Philipe Coutinho and new contract for Lionel Messi, along with the impending arrival of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.
And according to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona chiefs have taken note of Umtiti’s dip in form – most notably during the 3-0 defeat to Roma on Tuesday – during contract negotiations and are now in no hurry to tie down the defender with a new deal and provide him with the financial package he has asked for.
Surely Barcelona realise that giving Umtiti, their best defender this season bar none, the deal he wants serves as the best way to keep him happy and firing. Further delaying that will only worsen his form and, in turn, increase his chances of looking towards the exit door come the summer.
