Manchester City will rival Manchester United in their pursuit of Napoli midfielder Jorginho in the summer, according to reports from Italy.
Jose Mourinho has outlined a need for midfield reinforcements in the summer ahead of Michael Carrick‘s transition to the coaching staff and Marouane Fellaini‘s probable departure from the club.
City will also be on the lookout for midfielders as Pep Guardiola seeks backup for the ageing Fernandinho, with Fred and Jean Paul Seri emerging as the club’s two main targets.
And according to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, City have identified Jorginho, whose agent was in Manchester last month, as another option ahead of the transfer window.
Guardiola has spoken effusively of Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli side this season, hailing them as one of the best he’s ever seen, and by extension clearly admires the man who sits at the base of its midfield, igniting sharp, rapid attacks through the pitch with cutthroat vision and spellbinding execution.
And Jorginho’s recent comments, I regret to say, read as a nod towards wanting to play in England but not for a side that plays like United under Mourinho.
“I think that I could fit (in the Premier League),” he said. “It depends on who else is around me – I need players with the same characteristics that I have.”
“There are English teams with this style of play, ball on the ground, quick transitions, high pressure. If one of those teams wanted me, I could fit and the other way round. My football way is not an usual one.”
