Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho had warm words to share with Scott McTominay as the youngster continues to impress in recent matches.
Much of the talk has been whether the academy product plays for Scotland or England’s senior side and it’s a testament to his form that both national teams are fighting for him.
McTominay is eligible to feature for either country as his father is Scottish and he was born in England himself but United fans couldn’t care less about it all.
Supporters only want to see the 21 year old keep up his good performances as they pride themselves on academy players making it in the first team.
Mourinho himself has also reflected those feelings, stating he knows nothing of his player’s decision and passing on words of advice.
Speaking on Scott and the decision on which national team to join, Jose said: “I can’t confirm because I have no information about that. My advice to him is not about national teams, it’s to keep the way he is.
“Humble, open to learning, intelligent and keep going in the same profile. He has the right people around him.”
Capable of playing in defensive midfield or central midfield, Scott McTominay has surprised fans by suddenly becoming a part of the first team.
While he didn’t have as quick an impact as Marcus Rashford had, the lanky footballer has started more games recently than most would’ve expected him to.
Initially brought into the first team with the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and Andreas Pereira, McTominay has arguably made the most of his time out of the three.
Tuanzebe got loaned out to Aston Villa after struggling to get minutes while Pereira showed no willingness to fight for his spot in the team and was loaned out to Valencia.
Some supporters argue that Scott managed to take Andreas’ ‘spot’ as a useful rotational option but he’s also managed to slowly but surely become a regular fixture in the side.
