Man Utd legend claims Mourinho is still adjusting to his squad

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has claimed that Jose Mourinho is still adjusting to his squad, more than halfway through his second season in charge of the club.

The Portuguese manager arrived at Old Trafford with a squad of players made up of a mix of Louis Van Gaal‘s stars and David Moyes’ leftovers.

Tasked with molding this group of players into a title winning team, Mourinho invested in the club’s spine in his first season, bringing in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman without a doubt was United’s star signing of that window and the former Chelsea boss followed it up the following season with re-signing the Swede as well as bringing in Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku.

Jose then brought in Arsenal’s best player in Alexis Sanchez in a straight swap deal that saw the underperforming Mkhitaryan leave the club.

It’s quite telling that in his two seasons so far, the former Real Madrid manager invested in the Red Devils’ spine both times with the Chilean representing the club’s only flank player.

A club’s spine is what makes or breaks a team and so it makes sense for Jose Mourinho to do so but it also shows how poor the club were in that department before his arrival.

Players such as Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and Ashley Young amongst others were not players that the manager invested in himself.

It would then make sense that Mourinho has to mould the team into his image until he’s been at the club long enough to completely refresh the team the way he would like.
