Jose Mourinho claims England’s media treat Manchester United unfairly

Jose Mourinho has described the treatment of his Manchester United by the English football media as “unfair”.

The Portuguese was delighted with his side’s 2-1 comeback victory against current Premier League champions Chelsea, which saw Man United consolidate themselves in second place, though some way behind leaders and local rivals Manchester City.

Yet Mourinho believed his side were not given enough credit, and are often condemned to an unjust lack of praise.

Due to the undeniable quality of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who could wrap up the title well before the end of the campaign, United have been overshadowed, a likely source of frustration to Mourinho.

“We had very good matches and we’ve had very good periods of matches,” Mourinho claimed. “I think sometimes the media generally are a bit unfair with us, with myself and the players.”

The 55-year-old believes his United side are better than the media suggest.

“We are better than you say, but you are right, against Chelsea we had a very good second half,” he continued.

“It’s a quality to know how to play against a team in a certain moment when they are better than you.

“Chelsea were better than us for 30 mins. I always say to my players, there will always be a period where the opponent reacts.”

United aren’t back to their best, and look some way off being the contender for major European trophies that they were under Sir Alex Ferguson. That is partly down to the brilliance of the current City side, but also due to some things missing in the side.

Mourinho cannot claim that yet, and doesn’t, but he is right to be frustrated by some of the treatment he receives given his side are second in the league, in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 and in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Other managers like Mauricio Pochettino is hailed for his work at Tottenham Hotspur, but United are ahead of them in the league and have won more trophies since Mourinho arrived in 2016 than Spurs have since Pochettino joined in 2014.
