Manchester United target Samuel Umtiti has “threatened to leave” Barcelona in the summer amid a continued dispute over terms of a new contract, according to reports from Spain.
Umtiti’s contract expires in 2021 but contains a release clause of just €60m, prompting Jose Mourinho to personally call the defender expressing interest in bringing him to Old Trafford.
The Frenchman is enjoying superb season and wants a salary on par with the likes of Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta, but Barcelona chiefs are reluctant to countenance such a package following the costs of of Philipe Coutinho’s arrival and Lionel Messi’s new contract, along with impending transfer of Antoine Griezmann.
And according to Spanish media outlet AS, Umtiti has threatened to entertain a move to Man United if Barcelona refuses to play ball in negotiations.
We’ve heard this old tune before, haven’t we? A player bang in form playing for a high profile club, on the cusp of his first mega contract to go with his performances, haggling for the best deal possible.
And there aren’t many better recipes for doing this than bringing United’s name into the equation. The success of this strategy is manifold: Ivan Perisic did it most recently; Sergio Ramos and Thomas Muller did it too. Cristiano Ronaldo has been using the spectre of United as a stick to taunt Real Madrid with for years.
Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing different at play here.
