Manchester United star Chris Smalling is reportedly being lined up by Everton as rumours continue to circulate on his future at the club.
The England international has played a large chunk of games for Jose Mourinho this season, mostly thanks to his teammates’ absences due to injury.
Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have all been injured at one point or the other this season and Smalling has filled in for them on different occasions.
Despite playing all those games, it’s reported that Mourinho considers the 28 year old dispensable and will look to sell him in the summer.
The former Fulham man represents United’s most senior centre-back but he’s certainly not considered to be their best and will be shuffled out of Old Trafford.
According to Caught Offside, the Mirror report that Everton are keeping tabs on Chris should he become available this summer with Jose looking to revamp his defence.
The Red Devils’ are well stocked in the centre-back position, perhaps due to their tendency to be injury prone but it seems that Jose is finally willing to move out some dead wood.
Rojo, Bailly, Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof all represent the club’s current options in defence and considering the manager’s favouritism to a 4-2-3-1 formation, there’s clearly not enough room for all of them.
Fans could potentially add Axel Tuanzebe on to that list by next season given Jose Mourinho’s admiration for him as well as his impressive loan spell with Aston Villa currently.
With Marcos recently given a new contract and Eric as well as Lindelof being signed by the Portuguese manager personally then it appears as though Smalling and Phil are the disposable players.
