According to The Guardian, Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld could join Manchester City or Chelsea in the summer should Spurs decide he’s no longer needed.
Alderweireld has been sidelined for the past three months after picking up a hamstring injury in the win over Real Madrid, but he declared himself fit ahead of last weekend’s North London Derby win over Arsenal but was omitted from the matchday squad and also hasn’t travelled to Turin with the rest of the squad for their Champions League last 16 clash with Juventus.
In his absence, £39m club-record signing Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen have formed a solid centre-back partnership, with Eric Dier occasionally dropping in to form a back three, which could lead to Alderweireld being deemed surplus to requirements, despite being a key part of the Tottenham defence since joining from Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for the former Southampton loanee in recent times and could revive their interest in the summer should he become available, but Manchester City are also expected to be chasing him in that scenario. David Luiz is likely to leave Chelsea in the summer after falling out of favour with the coaching staff which would leave a hole in the squad that needs to be filled.
