Jose Mourinho has claimed that Manchester United will be competing for every trophy possible by 2020.
The Portuguese saw his side lose at Wembley on Wednesday night, beaten by Tottenham Hotspur in a poor showing. The Reds allowed Christian Eriksen to score after just 11 seconds and could never recover, with Phil Jones later sticking the ball into his own net to double Spurs’ lead after a string of defensive errors right across the side, as there had been in the first goal.
Having won five out of five games in January, Mourinho’s team were looking to continue the momentum but failed dramatically in a woeful performance where even regular stars failed to impress like Paul Pogba.
Asked where he sees Man United being in 2020 having signed a new contract at the club lasting until then, Mourinho said, “better than now.”
Continuing, the 55-year-old indicated that by then he will have bolstered United’s squad.
“[We will be] fighting for what we are fighting for now but with different ammunition,” he told BT Sport.
“I see us being real contenders for everything, that’s the level we want to achieve.”
Mourinho also defended his decision to continue living in the Lowry Hotel in Manchester rather than buying a house or flat in the city. It’s been much criticiqued, though much defended by others, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola having bought permanent accommodation.
“People don’t share with me the intimacy of the inside doors. I think I am a funny guy sometimes, maybe with some silly jokes or something like that,” he said.
“Press conference, I don’t like it. Football matches, I am focused on the match.
“Pre-match [and the] after-match interview is still part of the pressure of the game so maybe people get it wrong.
“The paparazzi that sleeps in the door of the Lowry Hotel, he sees me in the morning when I am sleeping, he sees me later when I am going back and I am tired. He is there 24 hours a day but he cannot get a nice picture.”
