Player Ratings: Lukaku stands up with best performance for United, wonderful game

David de Gea 5 – Willian’s opener was hit just to the side of De Gea’s body and it was a rare error from the Spaniard. Was far from his best, with two nervous moments in the second half.

Antonio Valencia 6 – The captain on the day had to play as both the right-back and right-winger due to United effectively playing with two players on the left flank. Crossing was inconsistent but covered for De Gea well at one point.

Victor Lindelof 5 – Left space open for Willian for the opener. Almost gave away an equaliser by gifting the ball to Pedro, but saved by Chris Smalling.

Chris Smalling 6 – Some important blocks, including to save Lindelof’s embarrassment, but can be partially blamed for his role in Willian’s opener, just like the rest of the backline.

Ashley Young 6 – Drawn in by Eden Hazard and left space open for Willian to run through and score. Happened against Tottenham Hotspur frequently at Wembley, too.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Some poor moments lacking concentration and some wasteful passes, but generally solid.

Paul Pogba 7 – As ever, sensational moments of technical ability on the ball and usually the driving force behind United’s counter-attacks. Played some piercing through balls and became more influential in the second half but outmuscled on occasion, including in the build-up to Chelsea’s opener.

Scott McTominay 6 – Having tracked Willian for some time as Chelsea counter-attacked, McTominay allowed the Brazilian to drift away from him and put the Blues in front. A woeful decision from the Anglo-Scot, and hopefully one he’ll have learned from. Good strength and confidence shown otherwise, though, to make up for it.

Anthony Martial 5 – Important role in Lukaku’s equaliser, but relatively quiet, subbed off for Jesse Lingard just after the hour mark.

Alexis Sanchez 5 – Quiet, dropped deep frequently. Not influential enough, yet, but played he penetrating, quick pass needed at times that others cannot. Became more involved after the introduction of Lingard but sacrificed for Eric Bailly after United’s second goal.

Romeu Lukaku 9 – Fantastic feet and a similarly good finish under significant pressure with little time or space to equalise for United. Some fantastic hold-up play, showing his monumental strength, epitomised by his wonderful cross for Lingard. His best game in a United shirt considering the opposition.

Substitutes

Jesse Lingard 8 – Came on and had an instant impact, with a meaty challenge to start with and then a fantastic header to win the game for the Reds.

Eric Bailly 6 – Slotted into defence as Jose Mourinho looked to close the game out after Lingard’s goal. Helped Smalling and Lindelof to cope with late Chelsea pressure.
