Paul Pogba’s cannot be considered a world-class player due to his inconsistency, former-Premier League player Damien Duff has insisted.
The French midfielder has been subject to criticism in recent weeks, having been the centre of controversy regarding his future at the club after reports that he had a dispute with manager Jose Mourinho over his best position for the Reds.
Ill for Man United’s 2-0 FA Cup Fifth Round victory against Huddersfield Town, Pogba was on the bench for the following game, on Wednesday night, a 0-0 draw against Sevilla.
He was forced on due to injury for Ander Herrera just 16 minutes into United’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg.
“He doesn’t have that defensive mindset, he doesn’t smell danger and he gives away goals,” Duff said of Pogba on RTE Sport.
“An alarming thing for me is top players, if they make a mistake, they won’t make it again, probably in their career.
“The goals he gives away, people always running off him, he hasn’t grasped it.”
Duff said that Pogba’s weaknesses in his game despite working with three of the world’s best coaches in recent years, at Juventus at United, is worrying.
“He’s had Allegri, he’s had Conte, he’s had Mourinho three amazing, top coaches and if he hasn’t grasped that by now I think he’s 25 in a couple of weeks… that’s worrying for me.”
Pogba’s worst performances have come in all-round terrible displays from United. Due to his price tag, personality and reputation, he is picked out more than others. Against Newcasle United in a 1-0 away defeat and a 2-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, Pogba was particularly poor.
That lack of consistent quality and not showing up in every game stops Pogba from being considered world-class, for Duff.
“I think he has world class ability, but he is not a world class player because he’ll let you down,” the Irishman said.
