Jose Mourinho must learn to harness Paul Pogba’s skill in better ways if Manchester United are to have success, claims Jamie Carragher.
The Sky Sports pundit suggested on Thursday night that Man United boss Mourinho is yet to discover how to use Pogba correctly to get the most out of the French midfielder
Pogba had a poor game against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, being substituted off just after the hour mark in a 2-0 defeat to Spurs at Wembley. Criticism was waiting aplenty.
But Carragher focused on Mourinho’s role in Pogba’s performance, having played him in a two-man midfield next to Nemanja Matic.
“This is Jose Mourinho’s team,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“He hasn’t been able to change them in the 12 months he’s been there.
“He still has the conundrum of what he does with Paul [Pogba].
“There’s nowhere you can play him in centre midfield sitting in a two in a big game,” Carragher lamented.
Pogba showed at Juventus his preposterous quality in a midfield three, playing on the left, and has done so twice in 2018 for United, against Everton on New Year’s Day and a couple of weeks later against Stoke City in the Premier League. In both games, he was named Man of the Match, being given fewer defensive responsibilities and more freedom to attack.
“It’s not going to change next season. He’s got a serious lack of discipline he’s got great ability and skill,” Carragher continued.
“The fact Mourinho hasn’t been able to change him is a big problem going forward.”
